Frequently asked questions
What does zero-knowledge encryption mean?
It means the encryption key is derived from your password in your browser using PBKDF2. Your master key never leaves your device. We store only ciphertext — without your password, neither we nor anyone else can read your exams.
How long does The Filing Cabinet store my exams?
As long as you set your retention window. You control the date per batch. When the window closes, you receive a reminder and can delete on your own schedule.
What is a Certificate of Deletion?
A PDF generated at the moment of deletion containing the batch label, deletion timestamp, reason, and a SHA-256 hash of each encrypted file that was destroyed. It is stored in your account indefinitely and can be re-downloaded at any time.
What happens when my subscription ends?
A 60-day export window opens automatically. You can download your exams and delete them on your schedule. If the window closes without action, remaining batches are automatically deleted and Certificates of Deletion are generated.
